How can leadership development help organisations to deliver great results ?

By Sibylle von de Fenn

A good company delivers excellent products and services ; a great one delivers excellent products and services and strives to make the world a better place. – Bill Ford – chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Company

Create the vision

Economic instability, global competition and talent shortage encourage organisations to improve their employees’ performance. As a result, more and more companies adopt a real talent and leadership development policy, especially for individuals with the potential to grow fast.
Research in organisational psychology has shown that the 80/20 rule is also true in the performance field. 20% of an organisation’s work force can produce 80% of the added value, but even those who are not part of the pool of high flyers can improve their efficiency dramatically when educated and trained to do so. People with clear leadership skills have a greater influence on other people and can create greater impact on business results.

In a world of constant change and transformation, organisational strategies and goals need to be regularly adjusted. Leadership development can only be efficient if companies establish present and future challenges and goals clearly.
In order to develop a powerful vision of the future and develop creative business cases and models, leaders need to be more visionary, entrepreneurial and courageous than before. In the last decades a great number of organisations have changed their business model and transformed their activities dramatically. Technological companies like IBM have become service organisations selling solutions instead of boxes or have developed a more consumer oriented product development like Apple and Philips.
In order to change a long established business model, a leader needs a great amount of curiosity, open-mindedness and a gift for observation and analysis. He or she also needs intuition and inspiration to generate new ideas and invent the future. This is why creativity and imagination should be stimulated from a very young age and not only logical thinking and accumulation of knowledge.
